When meeting a contact at a networking event, asking for an informational interview is a great way to separate yourself from everyone else at the event and an amazing way to create a one-on-one conversation.  After you have made a connection send a thank you note, thanking them for their time, and follow up with a  phone call asking them for an informational interview.  The main goal of the informational interview is to gain insight into a specific company and establish connection with employees within the organization.  However, it is always important to be prepared for an informational interview to quickly transform into a real interview.  Be sure to bring an up to date resume and dress to impress.  Below are some great talking points to get the conversation flowing with the people you meet with.

• What did you do after graduating from college?

• What made you decide to go into the field you are in today?

• What advice do you have for recent college grads?

• What has been your most difficult challenge?

• How do you maintain balance between your work and your family?
