About

A website. Nah, it’s a blog. No, it’s actually a platform. GenYJourney.com is a platform for Gen-Y’s to engage, to learn, to contribute and to collaborate with fellow Gen-Y’s. It has become the go-to place for college students and young professionals alike looking for life and career development advice from fellow Gen-Y’s. Being a young person in such a dynamic world is difficult.  The 10 years of your life that include high school, college and the start of your grown-up life and career are so important.  Each year, each experience sets a foundation for the rest of your life. My goal is to help you develop a rock-solid foundation encompassing all aspects of a Gen-Y’s life. Let’s roll…

A blogger…a recent college grad…a young professional…a boyfriend…a sports fan…a Gen-Y. I’m just like you. And that’s why I’m so passionate about GenYJourney.com. I’m in a unique position to provide candid and honest thoughts, feedback and experiences to help you learn from my journey (along with the over 50 other contributors who have joined GenYJourney.com). Unlike college professors, the media, your parents or advertisers, I have no reason not to tell you exactly what life as a young adult is like. No one is paying me. There are no expectations — just real-world experiences.

I guess I didn’t really answer the question…so, who is Tyler Durbin

I’m just a small town kid. Raised in Danville, Ohio, my journey has taken me from the farms of Central Ohio to Hong Kong to a stint in Central America along the way.

Danville is a place where everyone does know your name.  A small, catholic farming town, I grew up playing sports, hunting, working on cars and doing anything and everything outside.  This is a place where my friends have become my family.

My journey led me to Miami University where waiting for me was an enormous culture shock.  I was all of a sudden among 18 year olds with trust funds, pastel colored polos, and high school educations I couldn’t even comprehend.

It’s those two worlds that have shaped who I am today.  I’ve seen rich and poor, western and eastern, victories and defeats.  This has created a passion in me to be open to different perspectives and seek out new ways to learn and think. Thus, I share. And I ask that you do too…

    Tyler,

I'm really excited to read about the professional perspective that you're developing and the success that you've had with making connections through blogging! We've been reading many of the same books and seem to have similar ideas about planting and cultivating relational “seeds,” building a personal/professional brand, and being professionally proactive.

I began blogging about professional development about 6 months ago. I felt compelled to share my experiences, which have been strongly influenced by the fact that I was a first generation college student. I'm also a native Ohioan (originally from Akron).

    Best,
    Latoya

    Hello fellow Miami alum!
After randomly stumbling upon this site, I have to compliment you on how you come across: proactive, strategic, experienced, knowledgeable, influential and credible.Your web presence is the most impressive of any Miami alumni I’ve ever seen (not that our alma mater is really known for doing anything that deviates from tradition or encourages unconventional approaches to anything.) How is it possible you graduated in ’10? My biggest question though is how you got into this from inside the Miami bubble. Even my fellow highly competitive, over achieving Strategic Communication major classmates, who are currently pursuing jobs in PR/media/promotions/marketing/etc., were totally uninvolved with the web beyond Facebook stalking, following Ashton Kutcher on Twitter and reading Perez. I tried to start using things like Google Buzz and Foursquare while I was there but barely anyone in the entire City of Oxford had even heard of Foursquare, let alone used it, so there wasn’t really anything to do with social tools like these if you can’t use them to socialize. What inspired you to do this? Did you teach yourself everything you know or did you somehow find some web-savvy friends to share your interest with? Sorry, I’m just seriously so shocked to find out that I unknowingly went to college with people like you who are even mildly geeky (this is a compliment, I promise) or are impressive for their own merit and not just because they are privileged and well-connected. Okay, this comment is way too long but I’d love to hear from you and hopefully wrap my head around how you came out of FSB! I definitely plan on following your sites because they seem really interesting and useful.
