Savvy Seconds: How to Get Your Own Virgin Island

14 July 2010 View Comments

Christina is a recent grad from the University of Denver and the creator of TheSavvyGrad.com.  The Savvy Grad is a blog devoted to helping you succeed in the unclear path between college life and the real world.

I have been reading Richard Branson’s autobiography, Losing my Virginity. Richard Branson is the owner of the Virgin Empire, a serial entrepreneur, and a thrill seeker. At one point in his life a teacher told him, “Richard you are either going to end up in prison, or be a millionaire. “ Well we all know which side he ended up on, but what we can all learn from this statement is that if you want to do something remarkable, or be something remarkable, you have to be willing to break a few rules and go where no one else has gone before. Of course I am not saying that we should become hazardous to society, or that we should sacrifice our personal brand, but it is important to question the limits placed around you and to consistently take the risks that others are afraid of. With this mentality maybe one day you can have your own personal Virgin Island.

I'm experiencing this in my current job as a business development representative. I'm relatively new to the company (8 weeks) but have found that I need to break other people's mind maps and procedures to create a new level of success for the organization. I'm not breaking the rules or hurting the company, but I feel like I'm helping take things to the next level by being effective.
